The trip came about at the suggestion of his friend, the amateur musician Axel Carpelan, and it was there that he began contemplating several ambitious projects, including a four-movement tone poem based on the Don Juan story and a setting of Dante's Divina Commedia. From the pulsing, flowing waters at the beginning of the first movement to the heroic themes of the finale, Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 takes us on an immense journey. But there’s something about the final movement, with its sweeping melody and rich orchestration that invariably raises the goosebumps on our arms. JEAN SIBELIUS: Symphony No. 2 in D major, op. 43 Jean Sibelius was born in Hämeenlinna (then known by the Swedish name Tavastehus), Finland, on December 8, 1865, and died at Järvenpää, near Helsinki, on September 20, 1957.

Sibelius composed the incidental music for Adolf Paul's play King Christian II,  Part of the problem is that Szell only recorded Sibelius' Symphony №2 in the studio once, and not even with his orchestra, or on his typical record label. The Finnish Government did so for Sibelius' 50th birthday and commissioned his 5th Symphony which was premiered that day.
